When we arrived in Hawera we were greated by both my sisters and my new nephew Samuel. We had stayed the previous night in the prestigeous haunted hotel in Waitomo then we drove down the coast road. This happened to be a fairly deserted gravel road so it was good to see some friendly faces at the end of the drive.
We hung-out for a couple of days in Wellington on our way to Nelson and back. The Wellington weather was somehow turned up to MAX – sure beat the last time when we had horizontal rain in “summer”. Ben + Will both had girls within 2 months of Kea so good to see who has the best wrestler.
Then on to Nelson. Cols + I both love the top of the South Island and this time we had a friend with a spare room in the area – bonus!
We did a few day hikes including a quick visit to Farewell Spit and a bit of the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Super windy on the spit so we didn’t hang around for photos. We managed to catch a pre-season rugby game (Highlanders vs Crusaders) the only day it rained on our trip.
We got some good backyard action in at Gregs and while in Golden Bay managed to get coffee on the ‘Pirate Espresso Ship’. 4 years ago we tried to get coffee on the ship – but they don’t open Tuesdays (we visited on a Tuesday). But it was worth the wait – fantastic coffee roasted on-board by a man with a crazy ginger afro.
Kea is a super good traveler. She will happily sleep on a car trip, jump for joy with strangers, pose for numerous family photos, but …
